Hi mich, The nano's great, both as a music player and a portable hard drive, managed to squeeze all my autocad files and gigantic photoshop files into it when i was preparing for my project presentation last semester. But 4gb is really not enough if you a large collection of music.
It was an impulse buy and in retrospect, I should have waited a little longer and pay just a bit more for the new 30gb ipod which came out barely a month later. Also, the fact that i bought the nano on launch day meant that the accessories were not available then. As a result, it became scratched and smudgey due to the lack of protective gear.
My advice would be to get the bigger ipod and get a case at the same time unless size is more important for you.

Thanks ryxx. Just in case you are thinking, the set up wasn't staged. The sun was great that day and just fell on the right place at the right time.
